It was a sad day in the fragrance world, as news of the legendary Italian designer, Giorgio Armani, had passed away at the age of 91. His influence in both fragrances and fashion, and even Hollywood, was unrivaled. Born in Piacenza, Italy in 1934, Mr. Armani was largely credited with bringing minimalism into fashion by creating the deconstructed silhouette. Before that, he grew up in a humble abode before going to study medicine but ultimately ended up in the Italian Army. He then worked as a salesclerk for a fashion brand.

In 1975, the Armani brand was born. He went on to make some of the most iconic designs with sensibility and put Italy on the fashion map which gave way to Italy’s booming sense of style that is known worldwide today. In 1981, Armani partnered with Ron Winnegrad to create his first perfume, Armani, which was marketed to women as a floral chypre. His first men’s fragrance did not come until 1984 with Armani Eau Pour Homme, a classic citrus aromatic with an Eau Sauvage sensibility.

1996 was the most iconic year for Armani in the perfume world, as it heralded the arrival of Acqua di Gio by the genius of Alberto Morillas. Dubbed at the “scents of the 90s” Acqua di Gio was the best-selling men’s scent of all-time. Fragrance fans and consumers alike couldn’t get enough of the bright sparkling citruses kissed with Mediterranean salt. It remains a top-selling scent even in 2025. From there, Armani was a household name, people knew him for his perfume, even if they weren’t into fashion. From Code to Acqua di Gio Profumo, the hits kept coming and Armani became a global sensation, showing it was able to modernize the DNA of the 90s into something that the youth of the new millennium could enjoy.
Rumors of Mr. Armani’s health decline were spoken of, with him missing his annual fashion show in June of this year. The iconic designer leaves behind a legacy of scented excellence that will forever echo in the halls of olfactory bliss. Rest in peace, Signore Armani. We will miss you, and we will not forget you.
