FAQs

Express Entry is an online system used by IRCC to manage immigration applications for three economic skilled worker programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, and Canadian Experience Class. Candidates submit a profile into the pool; those with top scores (based on age, education, work experience, etc.) get “Invitations to Apply” (ITAs) for permanent residence.
No — a job offer is not always required. It can help boost your score (if it meets certain criteria), but you can still enter the pool without one if you meet the other eligibility requirements.
You’ll need language test results (English or French), an educational credential assessment (if your education is outside Canada), proof of work experience in a skilled occupation, valid passport, and other identity / background documents.
Once in the pool, candidates are ranked using the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). Points are awarded based on factors like age, education, language ability, work experience, and adaptability. IRCC periodically holds “draws” and invites those with highest scores to apply for permanent residence.
After an Invitation to Apply (ITA) is issued, you have a limited time to submit a complete permanent residence application (including all required documents). IRCC’s goal is to process complete applications within *six months*, though actual times can vary depending on country, document completeness, background checks, etc.
Up to 12 months. If you’re not invited within 12 months, your profile expires and is removed; you may create a new profile after expiry.
FSW/FST applicants generally must show proof of funds (amounts updated annually). You don’t need proof of funds if applying under CEC, or if you have a valid job offer and are authorized to work in Canada—even if invited under FSW/FST.
No. IRCC allows only one active profile per person; multiple profiles don’t increase your chances.
Yes. CEC allows eligibility from outside Canada if you obtained at least 12 months of qualifying Canadian skilled work in the 3 years before your ITA.
Use IRCC’s CRS tool and “Check your score” page to see factors and past cut-offs; invitations are issued to top-ranked candidates in each round.
